Motion Fan Hikes - Gear List

Choosing the right gear for your trip is important in maximizing your enjoyment. In planning, remember that we'll be in the mountains where daytime temperatures are warm and nighttime temperatures can be cold. Even in August it is possible to have a little rain or snow! Personal clothing (not tent, sleeping bag or pad) should be packed into a medium size duffel bag or large compression stuff sack weighing no more than 15 pounds. Below is a recommended list of gear that will maximize your comfort while keeping weight to a minimum.

  • Sleeping Bag: 15-20 degree bag. (example: Mountain Hardware Piute)
  • Sleeping Pad: Inflatable or foam pad. (example: Thermarest Prolight)
  • Tent: 3 season lightweight tent. (example: Henry Shires Tarptent, MSR Hubba Hubba, Kelty)
  • **Note: The above items are available through SYMG at no cost. If needed, check the appropriate box on the registration form
  • Daypack: Around 15-20 Liters. (example: Camelbak Cloudwalker; Columbia)
  • Boots: Lightweight, low or high top, good traction. (example: Columbia Grizztooth, Vasque Breeze, 5.10)
  • Socks: 2-3 pairs, wool or synthetic hiking socks. (example: Columbia, Smartwool, Thorlo are all good)
  • Underwear: 2-3 pairs. Synthetics are nice for hiking in, plus a cotton pair to change into (example: Icebreaker and Patagonia have large selections)
  • Long Underwear Bottom: light/mid weight wool or synthetic (example: Icebreaker and Patagonia have large selections)
  • Long Underwear Top: mid weight wool or synthetic. Half zip necks are nice (example: M's Columbia Mountain Tech Long sleeve half zip; W's Columbia Silver Ridge Knit half zip)
  • Hiking Pants/Shorts: One pair of convertibles do the work of pants and shorts for less weight. (example: Columbia Silver Ridge Convertible Pants, Shorts)
  • Hiking Shirt: One or two synthetic t-shirts, collared shirt, short or long sleeve, as preferred. (example: Columbia Silver Ridge Collection, Columbia Mountain Tech Short Sleeve)
  • Insulating Layer: Light fleece, light wool sweater. (example: Patagonia R1)
  • Insulating Jacket: Heavy fleece, down or synthetic "puffy" jacket. (example: Columbia M's Ballistic II; W's Twilight Topaz)
  • Waterproof Shell / Pants: Lightweight waterproof/breathable Top & Bottom. (example: Columbia M's Hot Shot II Shell, Marmot Precip Collection)
  • Sun Hat: Baseball cap style, or more if needed. (example: Columbia Silver Ridge Cap)
  • Warm Hat: For the chilly nights and mornings. (example: Columbia Chunky Beanie)
  • Sunglasses: A must in the mountains!
  • Personal Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, sunscreen, chapstick, soap, bug repellant(example: Biodegradable soap such as CampSuds)
  • Personal Medications: Don't forget these!
  • Headlamp: Preferable to a hand-held flashlight. (example: Black Diamond Ion)
  • Water Bottle/bladder: 2-3 liters of capacity. (example: Bottles or Camelbak system)
  • Whistle: It's louder than a voice and we require that anyone under 18 carries one.
  • Duffel Bag: For your gear going on mules. You should be able to pack everything into a small duffle or better yet, a compression sack; excepting tent, sleeping bag & pad. (example: Granite Gear Drylite Compression Sack, Large Columbia Freeboard; )
  • Trash Bag: For your duffel/stuff sack , if it is not waterproof.
  • Optional: Consider these items below as luxuries.
  • Trekking Poles: Highly Recommended to reduce fatigue and add stability. (example: Leki Thermolite)
  • Book: For relaxing at camp.
  • Knife: Could be handy.
  • Camp Towel: Small packtowl for washing / drying (example: MSR Pack Towl)
  • Gloves: Lightweight- for early or late season trips (example: Columbia Mountain Access Liner Glove)
  • Swimsuit: There are many lakes and rivers to swim in.
  • Camp Shoes: Something comfortable for camp. (example: Crocs, Teva/Chaco sandals or flip flops)
  • Fishing Gear: Including license. Kids under 16 fish free.
  • Camera: For posterity
